Air Layering

I read somewhere that this plant in my office, dieffenbachia, looks best small and bushy, and the best way to accomplish that is through "air layering". I have never even hear of that process, so I looked it up and thought I'd give it a try.

See the plastic section in the middle of the cane.

I plan to cut the cane below the plastic after it has developed roots and replant the top. Then I'll cut the cane at the soil, and chop it into 1 inch pieces and plant them in the dirt. We'll see if it works, either way I learned a new technique.
